This afternoon, I read again the classical account of the martyrdom of St. Polycarp. Extraordinary. People could argue that the report is made by a biased Christian witness. But isn’t most of history so biased? Why must some reports be preferred? Because they are more believable? Believable by what standards? So many questions.
