From a Facebook alert. I recommend:

During the weekend of the 4th- 6th July Young Catholic Adults will be running a Traditional Retreat at Douai Abbey, the retreat will be led by Br. Christopher Greener who will give a series of talks on St. Benedict. The weekend will be full-board (except for the Sunday lunch). Douai Abbey, situated on high ground in the Berkshire countryside overlooking the beautiful Kennet valley towards the distant Hampshire downs, is within easy reach of London, Reading, Oxford and many places of interest. It provides an ideal setting for quiet reflection, retreats and for conferences.

Hospitality has been a special concern of monasteries from the earliest times. St Benedict teaches in the Rule “All guests are to be welcomed as Christ”. All rooms are fully en-suite offering accommodation for guests in the Bl Hugh Faringdon , St Alban Roe and the St Benet Biscop buildings.

One of the comments frequently made about Douai is that it offers an environment and atmosphere of peace and serenity, where the cares of daily life can be left behind.

- Places are limited so please book early
- YCA will have it’s own area set aside
- There will be a social bar available in the evening
- A Marian Procession will take place on Saturday 5th July in the Abbey grounds
- Traditional Mass will be celebrated on Sunday 6th July at an FSSP
Mass Centre (approx 15 mins away)

The cost of the weekend will be:-

Saturday 5th – Sunday 6th July
48 pounds full-board (except Sunday lunch)
25 pounds for students/low waged/unwaged

Friday 4th - Saturday 5th – Sunday 6th July
88 pounds full-board (except Sunday lunch)
45 pounds for students/low waged/unwaged

Or come for the day on Saturday 5th July
Suggested donation 5 pounds (extra for meals)

Scripture
Take heed that you do not your justice before men, to be seen by them: otherwise you shall not have a reward of your Father who is in heaven. Therefore when thou dost an alms-deed, sound not a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be honoured by men. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward. But when thou dost alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doth. That thy alms may be in secret, and thy Father who seeth in secret will repay thee.

Scripture
Have mercy on me, O God, according to thy great mercy. And according to the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my iniquity. Wash me yet more from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my iniquity, and my sin is always before me. To thee only have I sinned, and have done evil before thee: that thou mayst be justified in thy words, and mayst overcome when thou art judged. Today, the Church remembers St. Anthony, that great light and the figure that stands in many of our church buildings. Copied below are notes made from the New Advent page:

* lifetime: 1195 - 1231
* born Ferdinand in Lisboa, Portugal to pius, noble parents.
* joined the Canons Regular of St. Augustine at fifteen, just outside the city walls. Later moved to the Convent of Santa Croce in Coimbra to avoid visits from relatives and friends.
* possessed of a great intellect and photographic memory, he soon gathered from Scripture and the Fathers a thorough theological understanding.
* inspired at twenty five by the martyrdom of the Franciscan missionaries to Morocco and resolved to join the Friars Minor and preach to the Saracens. With the habit, he took the name of Anthony.
* prevented by illness from going to Morocco and driven onto the coast of Sicily where he then remained to regain his health.
* his hitherto undiscovered wealth of knowledge in theological matters is unexpectedly discovered when he is surprised with a request to preach at an ordination at Montepaolo. Even Francis of Assisi is impressed.
* worked against the Cathars and the Patarines in Italy and the Albigensians in France. His work made him malleus hereticorum or Hammer of the Heretics.
* worked interesting miracles of conversion: caused a donkey to kneel before the Blessed Sacrament, neutralised poisoned food given him by heretics, caused fish in the river Brenta to attend one of his sermons.
* other astounding taumaturgics include teleportation (interrupting a homily to recite the Office in another location), preventing his hearers from being soaked by rain, prophecy and mind reading, restoring an amputated foot, etc.
* encountered the infant Christ in a celebrated apparition, although the location of this vision is disputed.
* died at thirty six, promptly appeared to his abbot.
* great following, canonised Pentecost 1232 by Gregory IX PP, being labelled ‘Ark of the Covenant’ for his profound knowledge of Scripture.
* when his tomb was uncovered thirty years later all was dust but his tongue, which was perfectly preserved. God loves to give us little signs.

You have heard that it was said to them of old: Thou shalt not commit adultery. But I say to you, that whosoever shall look on a woman to lust after her, hath already committed adultery with her in his heart. And if thy right eye scandalize thee, pluck it out and cast it from thee. For it is expedient for thee that one of thy members should perish, rather than that thy whole body be cast into hell. I have much to do in these few days and little time to do it in. The next few posts will be short. Too many things are left by student bodies for the end of term. When remaining essays and exams abound. The Gospel tells us today that the law ‘thou shalt not kill’ is too loose. It must be qualified or supported by ‘thou shalt not be angry.’ It apparently doesn’t seem to damn one immediately, but puts one in danger of damnation. Mind wandering, book-pile growing, end of post.

Adventures on the internet
  • Here we go: ‘Angels and Demons’ will now continue the stupidity of the davinci code, and in the middle of Rome. I predict a big flop, if the story has the same racy plot as the first movie. But it will sell the damned book, of course. Anyhow, muchos dineros for Mr. Brown.
  • I’m weary of the part of the dialogue coming out of Iran. Most of it is self-confident anti-US, anti-Israel rhetoric. Nothing positive to work with, it seems. Again, this terrorist sort of antagonism to Israel can be based on little else but religion. I understand that there are some violations of human rights in Israel, but nothing so serious that it justifies ‘wiping off the map’ an entire nation. But surely, surely Islam is not a religion of hate. That cannot be. Stand up, O Representatives of Islam, and say it isn’t so. When the time comes, Europe must stand up to defend Israel.
Scripture
You have heard that it was said to them of old, “Thou shalt not kill.” And whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment. But I say to you, that whosoever is angry with his brother, shall be in danger of the judgment. And whosoever shall say to his brother, “Raca,” shall be in danger of the council. And whosoever shall say, “Thou Fool,” shall be in danger of hell fire. If therefore thou offer thy gift at the altar, and there thou remember that thy brother hath any thing against thee; leave there thy offering before the altar, and go first to be reconciled to thy brother: and then coming thou shalt offer thy gift. St. Barnabas was ranked later, as Paul was, with the Twelve, although not of their original number. Born to a Jewish family on Cyprus, he was a Levite and apparently a relative to Mark the Evangelist and spent much time in Jerusalem. After his conversion to Christianity shortly after Pentecost, he gave away his property for the Church and became a notable preacher. He was sponsor to the Church for the newly converted apostle Paul. With the beginning of the mission to the gentiles, Barnabas was sent to Antioch where he welcomed the first gentile Christians and persuaded Paul to begin preaching in Antioch. Subsequently, Barnabas and Paul became missionaries to the gentile world. After his separation from Paul and journey to Cyprus, we know little about the rest of Barnabas’ life; he is mentioned in the later first epistle to the Corinthians. Various (unreliable) traditions present him as bishop of Milan, preacher at Alexandria and Rome, convertor of St. Clement, martyr in Cyprus.

Scripture
And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believing, were converted to the Lord. 22 And the tidings came to the ears of the church that was at Jerusalem, touching these things: and they sent Barnabas as far as Antioch. Who, when he was come, and had seen the grace of God, rejoiced: and he exhorted them all with purpose of heart to continue in the Lord. For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith. And a great multitude was added to the Lord. (Acts 11:24)

Term draws to a close and I cannot wait to get off the routine for a while. Mapping the links over the last few weeks, I find myself posting a lot more pro Israeli material. While I cannot approve of every policy of the State of Israel, I would tend to favour Israel’s defence over their adversaries as a natural response to provocation. It’s all about survival, after all. I’ve also found myself linking to more pro-life material. I find the way that little babies are treated to be grotesque, given that they are human beings. The common tactic is to deny them their humanity until they reach a certain level of development, and before then treating them in a way that most of us wouldn’t treat animals. My outlook in these things is still instinctive and relatively uninformed, not properly thought out.

Scripture
You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men. You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house. So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:13-16)

St. Ephrem, fourth century son of a pagan priest, was instructed by St. James, bishop of Nisibis, and baptised at eighteen. When the region was lost to Persia in AD363, the Christian population abandoned Nisibis and moved to Edessa, where Ephrem spent the rest of his life as a hermit, known for his severe asceticism. He is known to have been a deacon and countered heretical sects active in Edessa, notably that of the philosopher Bardesanes. His literary work comes from this period: sermons, hymns, exegetical tretises. He is said to have met St. Basil and rejected his offer of the priesthood and an episcopate. The body of St. Ephrem is said to be in possession of the monastery of St. Sergius in Edessa. Twenty years after his death, St. Jeromes mentioned him in his catalogue of illustrious Christians as Ephraem, deacon of the Church of Edessa. The New Advent page goes on to list his writings. He is a doctor of the Church.
